Dr. Randy J. Epstein, MD (1955–2025)

Randy J. Epstein M.D. and Linda S. Katz M.D. Benefit Fund was established by Drs. Epstein and Katz to continue a lasting legacy that reflects Dr. Epstein's deep gratitude for Rush and his unwavering pursuit of knowledge, innovation and compassionate patient care.

Your gift will provide critical resources for trainees pursuing innovative research and advanced learning opportunities in corneal disease, surgery and treatment and strengthen Rush’s reputation as a leader in ophthalmic education and care.


A Chicago Connection & Distinguished Education

Chicago native Randy J. Epstein earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois in Urbana Champaign. He completed his medical degree at Rush Medical College, followed by an ophthalmology residency at Rush–Presbyterian–St. Luke’s. He then pursued fellowships in ocular immunology and cornea/external disease & refractive surgery at Emory University, where he was awarded the prestigious NIH/National Eye Institute National Research Service Award.

Founding Chicago Cornea Consultants & Clinical Leadership
In 1986, Dr. Epstein returned to Chicago, joining Dr. Richard Dennis and co-founding Chicago Cornea Consultants. He served as a corneal specialist and comprehensive ophthalmologist, with expertise in refractive lens exchange, corneal surgery, and managing complex surgical complications. He also taught at Rush Medical College and trained medical students, residents, fellows, and international ophthalmologists.

Awards & Recognition
Frequently named one of Chicago Magazine’s "Top Doctors" — Received the Honor Award and the 2004 Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology — Honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award by Emory University Academic Roles & Service Professor of Ophthalmology at Rush University. Active in many professional organizations including the AMA, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, International Society of Refractive Surgery, Illinois State and Chicago Medical Societies, Illinois Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and Chicago Ophthalmological Society. Served on Eversight Illinois’s Executive Board to support corneal transplant access and eye research.

Passions Beyond Medicine
When he wasn’t caring for patients, Dr. Epstein enjoyed spending time with his family, skiing, golf, running marathons, scuba diving, and global travel.
